pompadour /ˈpɑːmpədɔːr/ を取り上げます。日本語でも「ポンパドール」とカタカナで聞いたことがありますが、日本語ではどういう意味になるのでしょうか。
手持ちの紙辞書では見つかりませんでしたが、電子辞書の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）には「ポンパドゥール（（女性の）前髪を高くなであげる髪型；（男性の）オールバック）」とありました。
英辞郎 on the WEBによると、この名前がついたのは｢ルイ15世の愛人ポンパドール夫人が好んだヘアスタイルから｣と説明されていました。人の名前がそのまま髪型を表す言葉になったことがわかりました。
これまでは、ただ前髪をふんわりと盛ることだと思っていましたが、髪型という枠組みでも2パターンあることが意外に思いました。（aqua）
