　奈良の東大寺では恒例の「お身拭い」が行われました。

Nara’s Great Buddha gets annual cleanup

An annual ritual was held Monday to dust off the 15-meter-tall Great Buddha statue at Todaiji temple in Nara.

The Ominugui ritual began at 7 a.m. with a Buddhist service, led by the temple’s chief priest Fumon Sagawa, which is believed to “remove the soul” of the Buddha. Afterward, about 180 priests and worshippers wearing masks and clad in white outfits climbed onto the hands and knees of the Vairocana Buddha statue — a designated national treasure — to polish it with cloths.

Some people worked in baskets hanging from the ceiling of the Great Buddha Hall, cleaning the statue’s face and chest. It took about two hours to clean and purify the statue.

　“dust off” を取り上げます。ホコリをoffすると考えると、ホコリを払うという意味で用いられていると考えられます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で確認すると “dust down (off)” で「（1）（…）のちりを払う　（2）（長い間使わなかったもの）を使い始める、（長い間しなかったこと）をやり始める」とありました。ほこりを払うという概念から、ほこりをかぶって使っていなかったものを再び使い始める、長期間していなかったことを再び始めるという意味も表すようになったようです。

　LDOCEには “dust something off” の形で “to remove something such as dust or dirt from your clothes by brushing them with your hands” や “to get something ready in order to use it again, after not using it for a long time” と定義されています。

　この記事では、1つ目の意味で用いられており、東大寺の大仏に積もったちりを払うということを表しています。掃除というとclean という単語を思い浮かべがちですが、ちりやほこりを払ってきれいにすると言いたいときはこの表現を使いたいと思います。（aqua）
