　“macho” /mάːtʃoʊ｜mˈætʃəʊ/を取りあげます。日本語では「マッチョな人」など筋肉粒々な人を指す時に用いられますが、英語では少し違ったニュアンスを持つようです。

　LDOCEの形容詞の項目では“behaving in a way that is traditionally typical of men, for example being strong or brave, or not showing your feelings – used humorously or in order to show disapproval”と定義されており、「男らしい、男らしさをひけらかす」という意味があることがわかりました。元はスペイン語で「雄の動物」を表すことからきているそうです。

　大統領は今年で64歳を迎えますが、上裸で釣りなど「タフガイ」な様子が伺えます。(flying bird)
