Smart system to help beat traffic jams during Tokyo Olympics
With three years to go before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics on July 24, 2020, event organizers have decided to introduce an online system that will allow athletes and officials to avoid traffic jams.
Under the system, all buses, passenger cars and other vehicles that carry competitors and other Olympics and Paralympics officials will be connected to the Internet. The data received from them will be managed integrally with separate sets of information on traffic jams and accidents owned by police and road administrators, respectively, allowing the system to give drivers instructions on optimal routes.

optimal /άptəm(ə)l/ を取り上げます。この単語を見たとき英語学のoptical theoryを思い出しました。ともかくもoptimisticと語頭が同じであることから、プラスの意味を表す単語だと思いました。
LDOCEで調べると “the best or most suitable” と定義されており、optimumとも使われることがわかりました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）にはoptimumで「（格式）最適の、最上（最善）の」や「（格式）（成長などの）最適条件」とありました。
記事において “optimal routes” は、渋滞や事故の情報から判断された「最適なルート」となります。
オリンピック終了後は、災害時に緊急車両などが効率的に動かせるよう、災害対策に役立てる方針だそうです。（aqua）
