7 buildings destroyed by blaze outside Tsukiji market
A fire outside Tokyo's famed Tsukiji fish market that destroyed several buildings including a popular ramen restaurant was extinguished on Aug. 4, more than 15 hours after it started.
Seven buildings over 935 square meters of land were destroyed by the blaze. No injuries were reported, according to the Tokyo Fire Department and the Tsukiji Police Station.

During the conflagration, the surrounding area, popular with tourists, was filled with smoke and ash. A power blackout affected about 90 buildings due to the blaze. Traffic was also closed in a 150-meter-long section of the road in front of the market.

conflagration /kὰnfləgréɪʃən/ を取り上げます。 “the conflagration” の間、煙と灰に包まれたとあることから、火事のことをさしているのだと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）には「（格式）大火、大火災、（大きな）争い、戦争」などの意味がありました。LDOCEには “a very large fire that destroys a lot of buildings, forests etc” や “a violent situation or war” と定義されています。
語源を調べると、 “1550s, from Middle French conflagration (16c.) or directly from Latin conflagrationem (nominative conflagratio), present participle of conflagrare "to burn up," from com-, intensive prefix (see com-), + flagrare "to burn, blaze, glow,"” （Online Etymology Dictionary）とあるように、ラテン語で燃えるという意味を表す言葉からきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
