　suds /sˈʌdz/ を取り上げます。 “a can of suds” を手渡されたということから、何か液体を表していることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみると「（複）せっけんの泡（soapsuds）」とありました。しかし、石鹸の泡をひと缶に集めて手渡されたと考えると意味が通りません。そこで、電子辞書の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）で調べると、他にも「（米やや古俗）ビール（の泡）」という意味が見つかりました。

　Merriam-Websterには “water impregnated with soap or a synthetic detergent compound and worked up into froth; also : the lather or froth on such water” や “foam, froth” などの他に “beer” と定義されています。

したがって “he was handed a can of suds” という部分は、このパラグラフよりも前に “The sea-grizzled veteran savored a cold beer” と述べられているように、冷えたビールを手渡されたという意味で用いられていることがわかりました。（aqua）
