After grueling auditions that lasted more than a year, five boys aged 10 to 15 will share the title role in “Billy Elliot the Musical” as the play prepares for its Japan premiere on July 25 in Tokyo.

Casting for Billy, which began in November 2015, required applicants to be 147 centimeters or shorter and have an unbroken voice. The initial applicant pool was 1,346, of which 450 passed preliminary on-paper screenings.

“on-paper screenings” を取り上げます。就職活動の体験から, とても身近な表現に感じました。まず “on paper” をいま一度確認したところ, 「紙上では[から判断すれば]」とありました。続いて “screening” は, 「ふるいにかけること, 選抜」を指しますが, 複数形で「ふるい残り」を表すそうです。(『リーダーズ英和中辞典』研究社) つまり, ここでは書類審査の通過者を意味していると考えられます。
先日, 日本の就活生にとっておなじみの「エントリーシート」は, 造語であることをUG先生から教わりました。このことから, “on-paper screening” はそのような書類に非常に近い表現なのではないかと思います。(Cayu)
