Baby died after being fed salt; police arrest nursery owner

A former head of an unlicensed nursery suspected of causing the death of a 1-year-old girl by feeding her salt was arrested by police.

Doctors say even a teaspoon of salt can be deadly if ingested by a child of that age.

Naoko Yoshida, 33, was arrested July 11 on suspicion of causing injury that led to the August 2015 death of Ako Shitasaka.

Sources said Yoshida has admitted to feeding the baby a liquid mixed with salt, but never believed that it would be harmful or lead to the child's death.

"The danger increases if the salt is ingested after dissolving in water because it can be absorbed directly by the small intestine," said Hideki Taniguchi, who heads the Perioperative Support Center of the Saiseikai Yokohamashi Tobu Hospital in Yokohama.
