Plastic-wrapped cups and toothbrushes are provided in the bathrooms. And just across the hall are the rooms where the corpses rest.

“corpse”/kˈɔɚps/を取り上げたいと思います。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(特に人間の)死体、死骸」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“the dead body of a person”と定義されています。一般的に「死体、遺体」を表現する単語でよく知られているのは“body”だと思います。それに対して“corpse”は少し硬い、かしこまった表現になります。LDOCEの定義を比べてみましたが、全く同じであり、意味的には違いはないものと思われます。(Blue Sky)
