Public abattoirs eyed to boost game consumption

The agriculture ministry will open publicly run abattoirs at 12 locations across the nation in fiscal 2018 to increase the consumption of gibier (see below), the French word for game meat, such as wild deer and boar.

The plan has dual aims: to assist local municipalities’ efforts to create local specialties using game meat, and to reduce the population of wild animals that cause damage to agricultural crops.

　気になった表現はgameです。スポーツの試合や競技などを表すgameですが、この記事ではそれとは異なった意味で用いられています。 “game meat” とはどのようなお肉のことなのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）でgameの項目を調べると「（猟の）獲物、猟鳥（獣）の肉」という意味が見つかりました。

　LDOCEには “wild animals, birds, and fish that are hunted for food, especially as a sport” と定義されています。

　ちなみに上記の英和辞典では、関連項目として “big game” が挙げられており、「（狩猟、魚釣りで）大物（猛獣、大魚）」という意味になることがわかりました。gameという馴染みのある言葉でしたが、このような意味があったのかと驚きました。（aqua）
