A lawmaker resigned from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party following a report that she verbally abused and repeatedly punched and kicked an apologetic aide during a tirade in a car.

Takeo Kawamura, a former chief Cabinet secretary, told reporters at the prime minister’s office on June 22 that the only reason for all the attention was that Toyota is a woman. He said many male politicians have behaved in a much worse manner.

Kawamura later posted on Facebook that his offhand remarks have led to a misunderstanding, and that he wanted to correct and retract those comments.

　“offhand”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「即座の；思いつきの」とありました。LDOCEでは“said or done without thinking or planning”と定義されています。しばしば“off-hand”という形で用いられることもあるようです。ちなみに、辞書で“hand”の項目を見ていたところ、“out of hand”にも「即座に、きっぱりと〈断るなど〉」とありました。こちらは準備なしに思いつきでやるというニュアンスで使われるのではなく、申し出などをすぐに断る際に用いるようです。(Blue Sky)
