Abe government intends to duck embarrassing questions in Diet

The government used every measure at its disposal to enact the anti-conspiracy law on June 15, an apparent survival tactic for an Abe administration that has increasingly come under fire.

The administration wants the Diet session to end on June 18 as scheduled to stifle opposition questions about nepotism scandals and to prevent the Cabinet’s popularity from slipping further.

　“come under fire”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、“come [be] under fire”で「«…の理由で/人から/…に関して»非難される[されている]、非難を浴びる[浴びている]«for, because/ from, by/ over»」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to be severely criticized for something you have done – used in news reports”と定義されています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』の注釈にもありましたが、メディアにおいてよく使われる表現であるようです。「ブログが炎上する」というような表現をすることがあります。少し使われ方は異なりますが、感覚的には似たものがあるのではないかと思います。
