“plume”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(空中に立ち上る)«煙・水・炎などの»柱、雲«of»」とありました。LDOCEでは“a cloud of smoke, dust etc which rises up into the air”と定義されています。語源はラテン語の“plūma”「柔らかい羽」にあるそうです(goo辞書)。英語の“plume”にも第２義には「(大きくふさふさした)羽」という意味があり、名残があります。(Blue Sky)
