VOX POPULI: Job hunting an ordeal that helps mold a person's character
The "job hunting season" officially kicked off June 1 for students expecting to graduate next spring, allowing corporations to start interviewing and screening them for employment.
That particular day is set by the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), but in reality, the rule is being ignored piecemeal with many companies jumping the gun.

“jump the gun”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(競技で)フライングをする；先走りする、許可なく始める」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to start doing something before you have all the facts”と定義されています。この表現はスポーツに由来します。陸上競技などでスタートの合図として“gun”「号砲」を鳴らしますが、その合図に対してフライングするというところからきているようです。(Blue Sky)
