　今回はdawn (on)を取り上げます。夜明けなどの意味がありますが、動詞で使用されるとどのような意味を持つのでしょうか。

　Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 “begin”と　“become evident to the mind; be perceived or understood”の二つの定義が乗っておりました。

　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、数ある意味の中に「（考え・真実などが）〔人に〕（初めて）わかり始める」というものがありました。特にit ~s that説やwhy説では、「…であることが[…かが]〔人に〕（初めて）わかる，気が付く〔on, upon〕」となることが多いようです。

　したがって文中では意訳して「もっと早くに知っておくべきだった」のように使用されているものと考えました。（Gomez）
