More college students study the meaning of death

Classes in which students examine death, and in the process consider the way they have lived until that point, are becoming more common at universities and junior colleges.

Known as thanatology, this study has received more attention since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, which brought the concept of death strongly to the forefront of many young people’s minds.

Changes in family structure and other societal shifts mean people today encounter death less often. Studying death academically can help students discover benchmarks for their lives.

　benchmark /ˈbentʃmɑːk/ を取り上げます。markが含まれていることから、何かしらの基準を表していることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（判断の）基準（for）、（測量の）水準基準」とありました。記事の内容を見てみると、自分の命について考えたときに見つかる価値観などではないかと思いました。

　LDOCEには “something that is used as a standard by which other things can be judged or measured” と定義されています。

　benchだけで調べてみると、座るベンチ以外にも「裁判官、法廷、議席」などの意味があり（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）、これにmarkがつくことで物事を判断する際の基準を表すようです。（aqua）
