“deplete”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)には、「〈多量のもの〉を減らす；激減させる；〈精力・資金・資源など〉を使い果たす；«…を»…から枯渇させる «of»」と載っていました。また、LDOCEでは“to reduce the amount of something that is present or available”と定義されていました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』によると、受け身の形で用いられることが多い単語であるそうです
この単語の形容詞形は“depleted”で、「劣化[減損]した」という意味になります。原子炉内で燃焼して有効成分が減少した減損燃料を“depleted fuel”と表現するそうです。
