Japan’s biggest complete dinosaur dug up in Hokkaido
The largest-ever complete dinosaur fossil found in Japan has been dug up in this northern island.
“Discovering the full-body skeleton of a plant-eating dinosaur in the late Cretaceous Period is the nation’s first of its kind,” said Yoshitsugu Kobayashi, associate professor of the Hokkaido University Museum.
“This is absolutely the biggest-ever discovery in the history of Japanese dinosaurs studies.”
The fossil from the Hadrosauridae family, estimated at more than 8 meters in length, appears to be of a newly discovered species, the university and Mukawa town-run Hobetsu Museum announced April 27.

Previously a life-size skeleton of a 2.5-meter-long Fukuivenator paradoxus from the earlier part of the Cretaceous Period was excavated in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture.

life-sizeを取り上げます。そのまま直訳で考えると「生きている状態の大きさ」ですが、実物の大きさという意味になるのではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると “life-size(d)” で「（芸術作品などが）実物（等身）大の」とありました。最後にdがつくこともあるようです。
LDOCEには “a picture or model of something or someone that is life-size is the same size as they really are” と定義されています。
ぱっと浮かぶlifeの意味は「生活」や「人生」などですが、lifeだけでも「実物、本物、実物大」の意味があり、 “a picture sketched from life” で「実物をスケッチした絵」（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）という例が載っておりました。（aqua）
