以前、ダンスサークルに所属している友人がK-POPの“roly-poly”という題名の曲で踊っていたことを思い出し、辞書を引いてみました。
LDOCEでは“a roly-poly person is round and fat”と定義されており、日本語でいう、「太った、丸々とした」といった意味になることがわかりました。
曲を調べてみるとT-ARAというグループのもので、歌詞は恋心を歌っているようで、「丸々とした」といった意味との関係性はあまりないようです。
この表現が使われた記事を探してみると、2ヶ月ほど前にイングランドでサッカーの試合中にパイを食べ、更に賭博に関与したとされ、チームを退団したゴールキーパーについてのものを見つけました。
推定体重115キロ、もしくはそれ以上ということで、こちらでは「巨漢キーパー」と訳せそうです。(flyingbird)
Roly-poly goalie Wayne Shaw eyeing return to football after being sacked by Sutton United
Axed Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw is eyeing a return to the game, stating: "I need football and I think football needs the Roly-poly goalie."
Shaw was sacked by the non-league side after he was caught eating a pie while on the touchline during Sutton's FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Arsenal at Gander Green Lane.
The act turned out to be a publicity stunt by Sun Bets who had offered odds on the rotund shot-stopper devouring the product during the game.
Shaw is now the subject of an FA investigation into the hearing.
