Why a bag of chips was selling for $12 in Japan

The potato chip crunch led to panic buying. Some snack lovers even resorted to buying in bulk. And once the supermarket shelves were swiped clean, online prices skyrocketed, increasing six-fold in some cases. A bag of Calbee’s pizza-flavored potato chips, which typically retails for less than 200 yen (around $2), was selling for about 1,250 yen (around $12) on Yahoo Japan’s auction website Friday, Bloomberg reported.
Tokyo-based Calbee controls 73% of the market for potato chips in Japan.

　今回はcrunchに注目しました。パリパリなどの音を表す単語ですが、よく考えると違った意味で使用されているようです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「ばりばり，がりがり」などの意味の他に「（一触即発の）緊張状態，土壇場，ピンチ，経済的危機」などが載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 "a crucial point or situation, typically one at which a decision with important consequences must be made"と定義されておりました。
　文中ではthe potato chip crunchとなっております。おそらく「ばりばり」というポテトチップスを食べた時の音と、「危機」という意味合いをかけて使用しているものと思われます。ちなみに「危機，緊張状態」などの意味で使用する際には、theをつける必要があります。(Gomez)
