The brilliance of figure skater and national icon Mao Asada should not be simply put down to her being a “genius” who was gifted with natural-born talent.

Asada, who has just announced her retirement at 26, put in many more hours of training than most other skaters and had to be almost dragged off the ice she loved so dearly.

So undoubted genius plus a great deal of effort was what this three-time world champion and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic silver medalist that entranced the Japanese public was all about.

Lori Nicole, a figure skating choreographer who had long worked with Asada, created a scene in the short program in which the skater looked up to her mother in heaven, put aside her yearning to focus on her routine, and then looked up once more as if she was trying to reach out to the one who had been an inspiration to her from the very beginning.

　choreographer /kȯr-ē-ˈä-grə-fər/ を取り上げます。日本語でもカタカナでコレオグラファーと使われているのを耳にしますが、このような綴りであることを初めて知りました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（バレエなどの）振り付け師」とありました。

　LDOCEにはchoreography で “the art of arranging how dancers should move during a performance” と説明されています。

　まずchoreographer で語源を調べてみると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “In Greek, a person who trained a chorus was a khorodidaskelikos” とのことで、ギリシャ語関連であることがわかりました。次にchoreographyで調べると “1789, from French choréographie, coined from Latinized form of Greek khoreia "dance" (see chorus) + graphein "to write" (see -graphy).” と、綴りはフランス語の影響があるようですが、もともとはギリシャ語からきたようです。

選手としての演技を見ることができなくなるのは寂しいですが、また新たな道で活躍されることを楽しみにしています。（aqua）
