2020年度末で二階建て新幹線E4系の「Maxとき」と「Maxたにがわ」が運転を終了します。
Double-decker Shinkansen series to end service
Japan’s only existing double-decker Shinkansen bullet train series is set to end its service by the March 2021 end of fiscal 2020.
East Japan Railway Co., or JR East, said Tuesday that it will replace its E4 series double-decker trains on the Joetsu Shinkansen Line with newest E7 series trains in stages between fiscal 2018 and fiscal 2020.
A total of 11 E7 Shinkansen trains, each with 12 cars, will be introduced on the line, which connects Tokyo Station and Niigata Station, in Niigata.

Due to the unique nose shape of its front car, the E4 series, which travels at a maximum speed of 240 kilometers per hour, has been affectionately nicknamed “platypus” or “huge squid” by railway fans.

noseを取り上げます。 “the unique nose shape of its front car” とあることから、新幹線の先端の鼻のように見えるところを表していることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）でnoseの項目を見てみると、「（鼻のように）突き出た部分、先端、（飛行機の）機首、（ミサイルの）弾頭」とありました。さらに意外だったことは、 “the nose of the gun” で「銃口」となることです。銃の先端部分を人間でいう鼻に例えていることが、なるほどと印象に残りました。LDOCEには “the pointed front end of a plane, rocket etc” と定義されています。
E4系に代わり、既に北陸新幹線で導入されているE7系の新幹線に入れ替えが行われます。（aqua）
