Shopping Shibuya With Yoshi, the Coolest Kid in Tokyo

To stock his now famous closet, he wanders through Shibuya, Harajuku, Daikanyama—twice a week when he has money from freelance modeling jobs, three times a month when he only has his 3,000 yen, or roughly $30 monthly allowance. With bills stuffed in his bag, Yoshi can kill hours at Nude Trump, a hole-in-the-wall overflowing with band tees and affordable Americana from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. Ragtag is one of his favorites for designer-brand vintage, thanks to its seemingly endless supply of Comme and Yohji, and it’s there we head first.

Shifting rapidly through racks of old Prada and Y’s, he’s drawn to boxy ’80s silhouettes. “I like the Balenciaga shoulders; it looks like what the ‘bubble generation’ in Japan used to wear,” he says. “The atmosphere, the image, is very nice.” Pressed firmly under the wings of designers Yoshio Kubo and Abloh, he’s begun sketching, picking apart elements he likes and rearranging them. “I am learning!” he says of his design aspirations, proudly pulling the Vogue Runway app onto his iPhone screen. “I was more punk before, but now I’m trying to be more adult, more high fashion.”

　今回はhole-in-the-wallについて調べました。Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、イギリス英語で “an automatic cash dispenser installed in the outside wall of a bank”、アメリカ英語で “a small dingy bar, shop, or restaurant”とのことでした。
　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「薄暗い商店（レストラン），みすぼらしい店」、「現金自動預け払い機（ATM, cash machine）」と載っておりました。形容詞で「薄暗い，みすぼらしい」という意味もあります。
　今回は「みすぼらしい」というような意味合いで使用されているものと思われます。
　記事内に出てくるNude Trumpという店の店内写真をチェックしてみたのですが、沢山の洋服がずらりとかけられています。写真を見てただ「みすぼらしい」というよりも、「いい感じの味のあるみすぼらしさ」のように思いました。（Gomez）
