　今回取り上げる表現は、"abrupt"です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「突然の、思いがけない」とありました。また、LDOCEでは"sudden unexpected"と定義されています。
　LDOCEの定義の中にもありますが、「突然の」という意味を持つ単語には他に“sudden”があります。違いとしては、“abrupt”の方がより予想外で、困惑している状態を暗示することができるそうです。(Blue Sky)
