北海道、羅臼町沖で漁船8隻が流氷に囲まれ身動きがとれなくなりましたが、羅臼海上保安署の巡視船「てしお」による救助で全隻が無事に帰港しました。
Coast guard frees 8 fishing boats stuck in ice in Hokkaido
Eight fishing boats stuck in drift ice off the coast of this northern town were freed on March 11 by an icebreaker dispatched by the Rausu Coast Guard Station.
The boats affiliated with the Rausu fishing cooperative had a total of 56 crew members on board when drift ice swept in about 1 kilometer south-southeast of Rausu port and trapped the vessels, according to officials of the Nemuro Coast Guard Office.
The icebreaker managed to reach the stuck fishing boats and escort them back to Rausu port. All boats were back in port by about 10:30 p.m. on March 11. No crew member was hurt in the incident.
The fishing boats left Rausu port early in the morning of March 11 to fish for Alaska pollock. The vessels became stuck in the ice at around 10 a.m.

icebreakerを取り上げます。名前の通り、氷を砕いて救助に向かう船のことだとわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1砕氷船 2緊張をほぐすもの（ゲーム、ダンス、冗談など）」とありました。ブログでも過去に取り上げられていますが、2つ目の意味に関連して、 “break the ice” で「1（パーティーなどで）座を打ち解けさせる、（みんなの）緊張をほぐしてやる 2（難しいことの）糸口をつける」という意味になります。
LDOCEには “something that you say or do to make people less nervous when they first meet” や “a ship that cuts a passage through floating ice” と定義されており、緊張を解くという意味では、初対面の場でのことをさすようです。緊張で張りつめた気持ちや空気を冷たい氷のイメージと重ねると覚えやすいのではないかと思いました。（aqua）
