　気になった表現は “chunky” / tʃʌŋkɪ / です。以前, 英検プリントでは「短くて太い, がっちりした」という意味であることを学びました。しかし, ここではあまりイメージが湧かなかったため, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で確認したところ, 「厚手に毛を編んだ」とありました。Merriam-Webster.comには “heavy, solid, and thick or bulky” と定義され, “a chunky sweater” という用例が挙げられています。つまり “chunky” は, 対象物の太さを指すとは限らないことがわかりました。ちなみに, 同じく「ずんぐりした」を示す表現には, “roly-poly” や “stubby” などがあり, 多くの語尾には “-y” が付いているようです。(Cayu)
