The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Kei Nishikori and the Rio Open will be upstaged this week. He’s the top-seeded player, but not the best show in town.
That’s because it’s Carnival week in Rio de Janeiro, where tennis will play second-fiddle to the sensuous samba rhythms, street revelers, and the famous all-night parades at the Sambadrome.
“If I win, yes, maybe I’ll go,” Nishikori said on Monday, admitting he didn’t realize it was that special week in Rio.
Brazil and Japan have special connections: Brazil is home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan, with some 2 million Brazilians tracing their ancestry back to the Asian nation.

今回取り上げる表現は、"second-fiddle"です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、"play second fiddle"で「(人・物の)下につく、脇役を務める≪to≫」とありました。また、LDOCEでは、"to be in a lower position or rank than someone else"と定義されています。それゆえ、"second-fiddle"で「脇役」という意味になります。
"fiddle"はプリントでも先週 fiddle aroundというPVを学びましたが，元々「バイオリン」を指す単語で、"play second fiddle"で、「第ニバイオリンを弾く」という意味です。そこから転じて「脇役を務める」という意味が生まれました。
