Basi, world’s oldest captive panda, celebrates turning 37
BEIJING (Reuters) — Basi, the oldest giant panda living in captivity, celebrated her 37th birthday on Wednesday, wearing a crown and getting a special birthday cake.
Tourists eagerly snapped photos as Basi — whose age is equivalent to 140 human years — slurped a soup of maize flour and eggs from a cake-shaped bowl at the Fuzhou Giant Panda Research Center in southern China.

今回取り上げるのはmaize /meɪz/です。
これはイギリス英語で「トウモロコシ；その実」という意味で、LDOCEでは“a tall plant with large yellow seeds that grow together on a cob (=long hard part), and that are cooked and eaten as a vegetable”と定義されていました。
よって“maize flour”で「トウモロコシの粉」となります。
また、イギリス英語での“corn”は「穀物」を指すそうですが、やや古い言い方のようです。（『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店より）
