PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe laid wreaths at various cemeteries and memorials Monday ahead of a visit to the site of the 1941 bombing that plunged the United States into World War II.

Abe landed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and then headed to National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where he laid a wreath. He stood for a moment of silence at the cemetery near downtown Honolulu, which is known as Punchbowl.

今回注目した表現は、見出しにある“lay wreaths”です。“wreath”は「花輪、花冠、リース」という意味の名詞です(『ウィズダム英和辞典』第３版、三省堂)。花輪はかけるイメージがあるので動詞は“hang”を用いるのではないかと思いました。しかし、『ウィズダム英和辞典』にも“lay wreaths at the foot of a monument”「記念碑に花輪をささげる」という例文が載っており、記念碑や慰霊碑に花輪をささげる場合には“lay”を用いるようです。

ちなみに、LDOCEで”“wreath”は“a circle made from leaves or flowers that you put on the place where a person is buried”と定義されており、“The prime minister laid a wreath at the war memorial.”という“lay”が用いられている例文が示されていました。(Blue Sky)
