少し前の出来事ですが、今年の11月14日は「ドレミファ音階」の発案者であるジョン・カーウェンの生誕200年目の誕生日だったようです。

Monday, 14 November 2016 is the bicentenary of the birth of John Curwen (1816-1880) who was the developer of the Tonic Sol-fa Method. Curwen based his Tonic Sol-fa Method on an earlier movable solmisation system invented by Sarah Glover and later, in the first half of the twentieth century, the pedagogical principles of Tonic Sol-fa were adopted by the Hungarian composer and music educator, Zoltan Kodály, and developed into what is now known as the Kodály music education method.

今回取り上げるのは“tonic sol-fa”です。

Oxford Living Dictionaryでは“A system of naming the notes of the scale (usually doh, ray, me, fah, soh, lah, te) used especially to teach singing, with doh as the keynotes of all major keys and lah as the keynotes of all minor keys.”と定義されています。

tonicを『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）でひくと「主音の；強勢のある；音調によって意味を区別する」、sol-faは「ドレミファ音階、階名唱法」とあり、“tonic sol-fa”で「トニックソルファ視唱法」となることがわかりました。

生誕200年を迎えたジョン・カーウェンは英国の音楽教育者だそうです。また、上記に登場しているゾルターン・コダーイはハンガリーの作曲家、民族音楽学者、教育家、言語学者、哲学者で、オペラ「ハーリ・ヤーノシュ」、「ハンガリー民謡『くじゃく』による変奏曲」などで知られています。

また、今日の自主ゼミでは“tonic sol-fa”にちなんで映画『サウンドオブミュージック』の「ドレミの歌」を聴きました。楽しく基本的な発音の勉強ができるので、冬季休み中にもう一度鑑賞したいと思います。(flyingbird)
