新潟県糸魚川で大規模な火災が起こりました。

A fire whipped up by strong winds has so far engulfed about 140 buildings in Itoigawa City on the Japan Sea coast.

Weather officials said gusts of wind at around noon reached almost 90 kilometers an hour due to a developing low over the Sea of Japan.

“gusts of wind”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「[しばしばof句を伴って]一陣の風，突風(blastより短く弱い)」とありました。語源を調べてみると、古ノルド語からきており「gustr, 突風」ということがわかりました。
現場の状況は、気象庁によると、日本海側の低気圧に南風が吹き込んでおり、出火当時も強風注意報が出ていたようです。また、空気が乾燥していたこともあり、「フェーン現象」が起きたとも見られています。
余談ですが、「ガスト」というファミレスがありますが、この名前の由来はgustとは関係なく、“gusto”であり，「美味しく，心からの喜び」という意味があるそうです。(lua)
