U.S. military site return in Okinawa announced

The Japanese and U.S. governments reached a formal agreement on Wednesday on the return of about half of a U.S. military training site in Okinawa Prefecture to Japan on Thursday.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy jointly announced the return of the land, totaling some 4,000 hectares, the largest such transfer since the 1972 reversion of Okinawa to Japanese administration.

今回取り上げるのは “hand over” です。 “hand over” には「〜を手渡す」という意味がありますが、今回は別の意味で用いられています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「（地位、権限、領地など）を譲り渡す、譲渡する（to）」とありました。LDOCEには “to give someone power or responsibility over something which you used to be in charge of” と定義されております。

今回記事では “The Japanese government plans to hand over the area to be returned to landowners” と書かれており、政府は返還された土地をその土地の所有者に引き渡す方針であることがわかります。
