Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)で調べたところ、 “move quickly through the air with a whistling or buzzing sound”と定義されておりました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）では、「（空気を切って）ピューと飛ぶ、（ブーンと音を立てて）すばやく動く」と載っておりました。擬音語とのことです。
