今回は見出しのtycoonを取り上げます。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “a wealthy, powerful person in business or industry”、 “a title applied by foreigners to the shogun of Japan in power between 1857 and 1868”とのことでした。まさか日本語が語源だとは思っていなかったので、驚きました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版,大修館)で調べたところ、「(実業界・政界の)大物,実力者,ボス」、「大君,将軍」と載っておりました。
