Dazai museum to be built in Mitaka
The city government of Mitaka, Tokyo, has announced a plan to build a museum featuring memorabilia of renowned novelist Osamu Dazai, in the city known for its deep connection with him.
The city government also plans to recreate the study of novelist Akira Yoshimura (1927-2006) who also lived in the city.
Mitaka Mayor Keiko Kiyohara said at a press conference on Nov. 22, “I hope visitors will enjoy the facilities as sacred places of literature.”
According to the city government, at least 70 of Dazai’s Mitaka-related items are expected to be put on display at the museum, tentatively named the “Dazai Osamu Literature Museum.” The items include postcards and letters in his handwriting as well as drawings, a wooden hand-lettered doorplate and his tax payment documents.

Meanwhile, Yoshimura — who is known for his works of literary reportage such as “Battleship Musashi” and “Sanriku Kaigan Otsunami” (Great tsunami on the Sanriku coast) — spent his final years in Mitaka. On Nov. 22, the city government also unveiled a plan to create a facility, tentatively named “Yoshimura Akira’s Study,” by shifting his study from his house in the city to the construction site and recreating it there.
