The Niigata prefectural government started to cull some 230,000 chickens in the small hours of Thursday at a farm in Joetsu, where the season’s second avian influenza outbreak in the prefecture was confirmed Wednesday.

Prefectural employees and Self-Defense Forces troops, mobilized for a disaster relief mission at the request of local authorities, will engage in the work around the clock until Sunday.

Because a highly pathogenic H5 flu virus was detected from chickens at the poultry farm, transfers of chickens and eggs are banned in nearby areas. Farms within 3 kilometers from the Joetsu farm will check whether their birds have been infected.
