Avalanche hits students

An avalanche hit three university students on the Tateyama mountain range in central Japan Tuesday morning, leaving one in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest and another with hypothermia, according to local authorities.

The three were part of a group of six members from a Wandervogel outdoor activity club at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The group had notified the university of a plan to conduct on-snow training on the mountain range until Tuesday.

Police received an emergency call from a 19-year-old member of the group around 8:25 a.m. He reported that the group encountered the avalanche near the Murodo area, which is at an altitude of 2,520 meters. The area is in the town of Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture.

今回取り上げるのはhypothermiaです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「（医学）（寒さによる）低体温」とありました。Cambridge Free English Dictionary and Thesaurus には “a serious medical condition in which a person's body temperature falls below the usual level as a result of being in severe cold for a long time” と定義されており、長い間寒い環境にいたことが原因で体温が低下し、危険な状態であることを表します。
記事の “another with hypothermia” という部分から、3人のうち１人は低体温症だったことが伺えます。
