It's time to put on the face masks and get a vaccine jab as the flu season has arrived early in Japan this year, according to the health ministry.
The ministry's rule of thumb for declaring the start of the spread of influenza is at least one patient diagnosed with the illness at the approximately 5,000 medical institutions around Japan designated to monitor the spread of flu.

今回取り上げるのはjabです。jabにはさっと突くという意味や、ボクシングのジャブなどの意味がありますが、今回はどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると、3つ目に「（英略式）注射（shot）」とありました。LDOCEには “British English informal an injection given to prevent you from catching a disease” と定義されており、注射は注射でも病気などを予防するための予防注射であることがわかります。
今回の “a vaccine jab” はインフルエンザの予防注射を表していると考えられます。
