Illuminated gingko trees lining a main street here are mesmerizing onlookers at the aptly named Festival of the Lights in Osaka 2016.

The 4-kilometer Midosuji boulevard, which stretches from JR Osaka Station to Nankai Electric Railway Co.’s Nanba Station, has been split into eight sections, each lit up in a single color, including blue, yellow, pink and purple.

今回はboulevard /ˈbʊləvɑːrd/ を取り上げます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べますと、「（フランス語から）1（英）広い並木道　2（米）大通り」という意味が見つかりました。Merriam-Websterには “a wide and usually important street that often has trees, grass, or flowers planted down its center or along its sides” と定義されており、木だけではなく草や花などが植えられている道路の場合にも用いるようです。両サイドに植えられている道路に加えて、道路の真ん中に植えられていてもboulevardを用いるということが意外に思いました。
記事内では御堂筋は “Midosuji boulevard” となっており、交通の手段として重要な道路であることや、幅のある並木道であることが表現されているのではないかと思われました。（aqua）
