Three men arrested over 105 million yen theft from ATMs
Three men are in police custody over the fraudulent withdrawal of 105 million yen ($900,000) from ATMs in Tokyo and six prefectures late last year.
The suspects on Dec. 27 used forged cards containing information of ones issued by a bank in El Salvador in Central America.
The men, including 38-year-old Tomoyuki Chiba, who is unemployed, of Kushiro, Hokkaido, were arrested on suspicion of theft and other charges related to the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department said Nov. 24.
A similar incident occurred on May 15 this year. A total of 1.86 billion yen was withdrawn from ATMs in Tokyo and 16 prefectures with forged cards containing information from South African bank cards.
The methods used in both cases were almost identical, and the MPD is investigating connections between them.
The three are suspected of withdrawing 1.8 million yen from an ATM at a Seven-Eleven convenience store in Tokyo’s Shinagawa Ward using forged cards containing information of a card issued by the El Salvador bank.
They have admitted withdrawing the cash, sources said.
