OKUMA, Fukushima Prefecture--It was no ordinary outing for the 13 students from Fukushima High School.

The teenagers toured the site of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant by bus on Nov. 18 to get a firsthand look at work to decommission the reactors following the triple meltdown in 2011.

今回取り上げる表現は、“get a firsthand look at”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)で“firsthand”を引いたところ、「じかの、直接の〈経験・知識など〉」とありました。LDOCEには“experience etc that has been learned or gained by doing something yourself or by talking to someone yourself”と定義されています。“get [take] a firsthand look at A”で「Aを自分の目で見る」という意味になります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。

ちなみに、“secondhand”という表現もあります。こちらには「また聞きの、受け売りの〈情報・見解〉」という意味があり、“firsthand”とは違って人を介して得る情報を表現します。“secondhand”には「中古の、使い古しの」という意味もあります。(Blue Sky)
