Japan has carried out a death sentence against a man convicted in a murder-robbery case in 2004 and another in 2011, both in Kumamoto Prefecture, the Justice Ministry said Friday.

Kenichi Tajiri, 45, was the 17th person executed under the current administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the second based on a death ruling by lay judges.

The execution, conducted at a prison in Fukuoka, was the first since March, before Justice Minister Katsutoshi Kaneda took office in August.
