go haywire
久しぶりのネイティブ通信。とある会議での混乱ぶりを述べた文です。
How many things went haywire? I would need an extra pair of hands to count the mistakes that were made yesterday.
go haywireは「混乱する、めちゃくちゃになる、故障する」という意味でしたね。英英で見ると2つの定義があります。
1 being out of order or having gone wrong
2 emotionally or mentally upset or out of control : crazy
うち、彼女の書いてよこした意味は2の方です。go~はもうおなじみですが、「〜という状態になる」(cf. go bad)です。hayは「干し草」で、wireは「針金」のこと。それらが集まって、なぜ「混乱する」になるかについては諸説あり、特定できません。
ともあれ、会議が「めちゃくちゃ」だったことは間違いなく、そのときわたしはmessとか、crazyなどとその混乱ぶりを形容していましたが、なるへそ、go haywireの方がカッコイイ(?)。さすがnative、こちらの方が言い得て妙です。(UG)
