Kawasaki Halloween parade draws thousands in Japan
Thousands of Japanese costume fans have joined forces for the Kawasaki Halloween parade - dressed as everything from a Chanel handbag to a Samsung Galaxy phone.
The annual spectacle celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and more than 130,000 people turned out to watch.
The parade is the biggest in the Tokyo area, and organisers said about 2,600 participants had dressed up in their finest fright-wear.
The Japan Times reports that the prizes for this year's costume contest included a holiday to Italy and 100,000 yen (£788; $958) in cash.
Three children's parades were held on 29 October, while adults got their marching orders today.
Several of those dressed up sported complex theatrical facepaint, or prosthetics including horns or huge fangs.
One sinister participant made the perfect zombie waiter, carrying a silver platter of fake human hands.
But the Japanese love of kitsch came through to counter the dark side, including a trio of girls dressed as multi-coloured donuts.

今回取り上げる単語は、kitschです。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way”と定義されておりました。1920年代ごろから使用され、語源はドイツ語だそうです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「（芸術・文学などの）駄作，低俗な作品」と載っておりました。形容詞として使用することも可能で、「低俗な，俗悪な」という意味になります。
発音は/kítʃ/で、日本語でも「キッチュな」とカタカナ英語として使用されています。
『ブリタニカ国際大百科事典』（ブリタニカ・ジャパン）によると、1960年代のポップ・アートのころから流行りだした言葉で、日本では1970年代ごろから使用され始めました。アートの世界では、ただ「駄作」という意味で使用されているのではなく、kitschを活かした作品も数多くあるとのことです。（Gomez）
