Family Time: Techy tips for the ultimate fall camping experience

Camping is a getaway, a break from the chaos and a chance to be in nature for that fresh fall air.

For some, camping means getting back to the basics to recharge. But camping doesn’t always mean you need to sacrifice technology. In fact, your smartphone can be one of your biggest assets. To help you get the most out of your fall camping trip, here are some hacks to help you become one with nature while staying connected.

Map it out. Smartphones can help you map your route before you even pack your bags. GPS apps create hiking routes and will even sync and save the best ones for future trips. Many apps even allow for adding points of interest along the way. Worried you may lose connection when you hit the trails?

Look to the stars. Clear nights on the campground can be a great opportunity to grab a blanket near the fire and stargaze. Now you’re able to have the knowledge of the entire galaxy at your fingertips. Many apps allow you to view constellations and even planets using augmented reality by holding your phone up to the sky. Go beyond the classics such as the Big and Little Dippers, and learn a bit of history behind new constellations along the way.

Liven up the kumbaya. Spice up the trip with the latest tunes. Have your favorite playlist on hand for your trip from start to finish. Many music streaming apps even have created playlists specifically for camping, road tripping and hiking. Bonus tip: Still want more entertainment? Bring along a smartphone projector and play a movie on the back of your tent, under the stars. You’ll be the hit of the campsite.
