Nobel winner’s inspiration becomes big-time seller

A book that inspired Yoshinori Ohsumi, winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, is flying off the shelves.

Ohsumi, 71, has mentioned the book, “Rosoku no Kagaku,” as one of the factors that triggered his pursuit of science. It is a Japanese translation of “The Chemical History of a Candle,” a compilation of lectures given by scientist Michael Faraday at the Royal Institution of Britain in 1860-61.

Publisher Kadokawa Corp. is hurrying to reprint the paperback edition.

It explains such things as the structure of a flame and the properties of air, based on the phenomenon of how candles burn. Ohsumi reportedly began to be interested in science after he was given a copy of the book by his elder brother, Kazuo, now 84, when Ohsumi was an elementary school student.

今回取り上げる表現は “fly off the shelves” です。手持ちの紙の辞書では見つかりませんでしたが、電子辞書に内蔵されている『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）には「（商品が）飛ぶように売れる」と載っておりました。Merriam-Websterで調べると、“fly off the shelves”そのものは見つかりませんでしたが、“fly off the rack” という似た表現が見つかり、 “to be purchased very quickly” と定義されております。「飛ぶように売れる」を違う日本語で言うと「売れに売れる」といったところでしょうか。日本語にも英語にも「飛ぶ」という要素の語が入っているので、関連付けて覚えやすいと思いました。
