buckwheat 復習

長野県箕輪町の「赤そばの里」では赤ソバの花が見頃を迎えています・

Visitors take a stroll along fields filled with a type of buckwheat that originated in Nepal in Minowa, Nagano Prefecture, on Wednesday. This buckwheat develops rare pink-red flowers and the blossoms at the 4.2-hectare site are expected to be at their peak this week. The cultivation of the variety in the town began in 1997, mainly as an ornamental. “Their colors are a bit pale due to typhoons and long spells of autumnal rain, but they’re blooming beautifully,” said the head of a local residents group that grows the flowers.

今回取り上げるのはbuckwheatです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）では不可算で「そば（の実）、そば粉（家畜の飼料、またはパンケーキの材料）」とありました。Cambridge Free English Dictionaryでは “small, dark grain used for feeding animals and for making flour” と説明されており、 “used for feeding animals” という部分が先にくることから、食べものというよりは動物のエサというイメージが強いのではないかと思いました。
語源を調べてみますと、goo辞書に「buck(古期英語 bōc BEECH)+WHEAT；三角形の種子がブナの実を思わせることから」とあり、ブナの実に似た実をつけるということが関係しているようです。
ソバの花は白いものとばかり思っていたので驚きでした。（aqua）
