Teenager Naomi Osaka, settling down after a dismal start, forged out a three-set victory over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina on Saturday to advance to the first WTA final of her career at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Osaka, a wild-card entry ranked 66th in the world, turned the match around to defeat the 20th-ranked Svitolina 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour 46 minutes.

“pow-wow”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(北米先住民の)祈祷会 会合」「会議」とありました。LDOCEでは“a meeting or discussion – used humorously”“a meeting or council of Native Americans”と定義されています。この‟pow-wow”はアメリカインディアンの踊りの集会・祭りで、「パウワウ」そのものに宗教的な意味はないということで、病気平癒や狩猟の成功などを祈るためにも行う儀式であることがわかりました。
ここで使われているようにスポーツの時にも使われる表現であることがわかりました。大坂選手がコーチと話し合うための「作戦会議」のようなものであることがわかりました。(lua)
