Campaign aims to stop on-the-go texting

A campaign calling on commuters to not use smartphones while walking was held near Asakusabashi Station in Taito Ward, Tokyo.

As the nationwide autumn traffic safety campaign kicked off on Wednesday, about 60 people from groups including the Taito Ward Office, telecommunications companies, Kuramae Police Station and the Japan Traffic Safety Association handed out fliers to commuters and passersby in front of the station. “Let’s get rid of smartphone use while walking!” they called.

Accidents involving bicycles accounted for about 40 percent of all traffic accidents in the ward, exceeding Tokyo’s average of about 30 percent, according to the ward office. “We hope to decrease the number of accidents involving pedestrians and bicycles by eradicating the use of smartphones while walking,” an official of the ward said.
