Japan's centenarians to hit record high of 65,692
Japan's centenarian population increased by 4,124 from a year ago to a record high of 65,692 in September, with women accounting for 87.6 percent of the total, the welfare ministry said Tuesday.
The number of centenarians has continuously risen since 1971 and is projected to grow further mainly thanks to advancing medical treatment, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.
The tally is an estimate for Sep. 15, previously marked as the Respect-for-the-Aged Day holiday, based on resident registry data as of Sept. 1. The national holiday has been observed on the third Monday of September since 2003.
The number of male centenarians was 8,167, up 327 from the previous year while female centenarians reached 57,525, up 3,797. The number of new centenarians in fiscal 2016 ending next March is projected at 31,747.
Nabi Tajima, 116, born in August 1900, is Japan's oldest woman, hailing from the town of Kikai, Kagoshima Prefecture in southwest Japan. The oldest man is Masamitsu Yoshida, 112, born in May 1904, a resident of Ota Ward, Tokyo.

今回取り上げる表現は、 “hail from”です。
まずhailのみを『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、動詞で「…を評価する，（タクシーなど）を呼び止める，に声をかける，を歓迎する、出航する」などと載っておりました。名詞では「あいさつ，あられ[ひょう]」などがありました。
“hail from”の意味も載っており、「…の出身[育ち]である」とのことでした。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “to come from or have been born in a particular place”とのことでした。
なぜ “hail from”でそのような意味がうまれたのか気になったので調べてみたのですが、はっきりとした記述を見つけることができませんでした。
しかし「新英和辞典」（第六版，研究社）によると、 “hail from”で「〈船が〉〈港〉から来る」という意味が載っておりました。このことから、港を出身地ととらえて使われ始めたのかなと連想しました。（Gomez）
